No truck driver can do without a navigation system anymore. But that navigation system must consider the characteristics of trucks and the current traffic situation. With the latest version of PTV Navigator, every driver always drives the fastest route thanks to traffic data from TomTom.

We all know what can happen when a truck driver heedlessly trusts a navigation system that is designed for passenger cars. Everyone knows stories about trucks stuck under an overpass or lost in a residential area. This is why PTV developed its own navigation system a long time ago: PTV Navigator. This system directs the driver along roads that match the vehicle profile. In other words, PTV Navigator considers bridge heights, axle loads, residential areas, and the designated driving routes for hazardous goods and LHVs, for example.

Fastest route thanks to historical traffic data

Nevertheless, truck drivers do benefit from navigation systems for cars. PTV Navigator makes grateful use of historical traffic data collected by TomTom. This data, based on the movements of millions of vehicles, tells us, among other things, at which times of day delays or traffic jams occur on which roads. PTV Navigator takes this data into account when planning routes so that drivers always drive the fastest route.

Insight into real-time traffic conditions

TomTom’s traffic information is not just limited to historical data. The data also provides insight into the current traffic situation. Has an accident caused a traffic jam? Is a road section partially or completely closed due to road works? Or is severe weather causing additional delays? Based on the current traffic situation, PTV Navigator calculates a new route including the new estimated time of arrival at the destination. If the route is not to your liking, the driver can easily select an alternative route.

Easily connected with a route planner, control tower or on-board computer

For those who want more control over their drivers’ routes, can easily link PTV Navigator to OptiFlow, our SaaS route optimisation system or PTV Axylog control tower. This enables planners to transfer planned trips and routes directly to the navigation system without the additional requirement for hardware. PTV Navigator is available as an Android app and can therefore run on the hardware of almost any onboard computer. Using modern APIs, the navigation system can be easily integrated with telematics and fleet management systems, making PTV Navigator an integral part of the IT landscape.
